Student Mental Health in Higher Education Hill Briefing

The American Council on Education (ACE) invites congressional staff for a Hill briefing on student mental health in higher education. Attendees will hear opening remarks from United States Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT). A panel of campus leaders will then discuss aspects of the student mental health crisis in higher education.

Schedule

Introduction:

  • Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) will give a brief overview of the issue.

Panel:

  • Moderator—Hollie M. Chessman, Director, Practice and Research, Education Futures Lab, ACE
  • Sasha Zhou, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health, Wayne State University—Zhou (pronounced “joe”) will provide an overview of the data on student mental health. Zhou is also a researcher and co-investigator with the Healthy Minds Network.
  • Sonya Clyburn, Clinical Psychologist and Director, Counseling Center, Morgan State University—Clyburn will discuss the challenges that campus counseling centers see among students and how they are responding, using her own work as an example.
  • Carlota Ocampo Provost, Vice President of Academic Affairs, and Professor of Psychology, Trinity Washington University—Ocampo will discuss efforts to address student mental health at Trinity Washington University as well as at other institutions.
