Description

Objective:

The course objective is to prepare the student with the skills needed to be full or part-time PIOs, including oral and written communications; understanding and working with the media; and basic tools and techniques to perform effectively as a PIO, both in the proactive/ advocacy times and crisis/ emergency response.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the role and responsibilities of the Public Information Officer during an incident
  • Describe triggers for JIC activation
  • Relate the information management cycle to roles and functions that are common components of a JIC
  • Describe the Federal ESF 15 organizational structures and resources
  • Describe flexible and scalable structures for organizing a JIC based on incident needs
  • Identify strategies for building partnerships at all levels
  • Identify the steps in developing a public awareness campaign
  • Develop a strategy for an awareness campaign on a selected topic. Describe the process of getting information to the public
