Description

Objective:

The course objective is to introduce students to ultrasound physics and proper instrumentation to obtain diagnostic ultrasound images. A review of high school math including algebra and scientific notation related to ultrasound physics is included. This course also includes an introduction to Doppler physics and how it is applied to ultrasound imaging techniques to evaluate vessels and heart chambers.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify key terms and concepts surrounding the application of ultrasound physics in obtaining optimal imaging of ultrasound systems
  • Extensively comprehend the principles of instrumentation to imaging
  • Comprehend physics formulas as they apply to ultrasound imaging techniques (wavelength, frequency, propagation speed, Doppler)
  • Evaluate the proper application of ultrasound physics in determining the system limitations and optimum sonographer manipulations
  • Enhance the usage of ultrasound imaging equipment for diagnostic assessment of disease states

General Topics:

  • Principles of ultrasound, physics terminology/formulas, display modes, acoustic parameters, reflections, vascular hemodynamics, Doppler principle, and hemodynamics
