Description

Objective:

To understand the infectious cycle, how it is spread and how to stop its spread. Instructions and directions will be given on how to perform various blood tests in which skills will be practiced in the lab. Clinical lab will include learning how to take blood pressure, check vital signs and practice venipuncture using a prosthetic arm. Laboratory tests such as hemoglobin and blood glucose are taught, and students are trained in OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) and blood borne pathogens. The student will learn the subspecialties of the physician's office and how to assist them in various tests and procedures. Students prepare and analyze urine specimens using reagent strips and accurately chart the results. Height, weight and vision are taught.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Perform venipuncture
  • Utilize the performance requirements for waived and moderate complexity tests as described by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations and exposure to OSHA and the rules and regulations regarding blood borne pathogens
  • Paraphrase how an infection is spread from one person to another
  • Demonstrate how to prevent the spread of an infection
  • Accurately perform vital signs on a patient
  • Demonstrate correct technique for routine finger-sticks and the associated blood tests
  • Correctly perform urinalysis tests using a reagent strip
