Description

Objective:

This course provides a comprehensive overview of core concepts in health and human development. As a lower-level Health/Human Behavior course, this course is intended for students from a variety of backgrounds and intended degree-programs. Emphasis is placed on general health, wellness, and mind/body connection; human development and relationships; fitness & nutrition; addiction; disease & prevention; consumer awareness; psychological and addictive disorders; intention injury; and violence.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify how personal choices influence health.
  • Apply the need to foster healthy relationships and how it impacts healthy development.
  • Identify various additive substances such as alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs that are used in relation to addictive behaviors and their effects on their health.
  • Identify diseases, disease prevention tactics, and risk factors for disease, including Infectious diseases, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic lung diseases, and dementia.
  • Identify risk factors, types, screenings, and preventative approaches related to cancer.
  • Recognize and apply methods to decrease preventable injuries and violence.
  • Apply the connection between the mind and body in relation to health and wellness in general, and mental health and illness specifically along with stress and its ailments towards your body.
  • Recall how healthy or unhealthy behaviors can affect human development.
  • Apply components of sleep, physical fitness, and nutrition, and their effects on the body and mind.
  • Recognize the nutritional requirements the body needs to be effective along with the importance of weight management and body image in relationship to health and wellness.
  • Compare and contrast reproductive choices.
  • Interpret key ideas related to health and human development.
