Description

Objective:

To use a problem-solving approach to recognize the particular needs of a patient who is terminally ill, has a disability, has AIDS and/or is elderly. Consideration and understanding are emphasized along with effective communication techniques. Community resources are examines.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe individual basic needs as described by Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory
  • Assess an individual for their health needs through the use of case studies using a problem solving approach
  • Create and present a research project on a population (terminally ill, disabled, AIDS patient, or elderly)
  • Identify the elements of communication and learn therapeutic communication skills
  • Identify how stress and illness can interfere or affect our basic needs and the ability to communicate effectively
  • Understand the four stages of burnout and learn how to try to prevent it
  • Discuss preexisting attitudes towards certain groups of people (the elderly, the handicapped, the AIDS patient, the terminally ill)
  • List what resources are available in the community to help our patients meet their basic needs
