Description

Objective:

The course objective is to explore a variety of concepts and theories to understand the similarities, differences, connections, and disconnections experienced by world communities. This class will include an introduction to the basic concepts, goals, and research strategies of anthropology, the nature of culture, its role in human experience, and its universality. This course encourages students to explore the complex interaction between individuals, social groups, social structures, history, and culture; and to apply theoretical principles of social analysis to critically interpret society.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the methods of ethnographic research and be able to put this knowledge into practice.
  • Develop a sensitivity to the ethical implications of ethnographic fieldwork.
  • Develop an awareness of the issues of power and inequality both locally and globally.
  • Apply key anthropological concepts to everyday life experiences.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of how anthropologists define culture.
  • Recognize, understand, and appreciate human diversity.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the subfields within anthropology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of past historical and anthropological mistakes and recognize how anthropologists avoid perpetuating these errors today.
  • Critically evaluate popular representations of cultures and peoples around the world.
