Objective:

To examine the legal relationship between the employer and employee, patient relationships, and legalities as they pertain to health professions.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Define law, ethics, and bioethics and know the importance of each
  • Define the types of medical practice and the importance of each
  • Know the guidelines for Ambulatory Health Care
  • Understand regulations and professional liability
  • Understand the importance of medical records
  • Perform collection and employment practices
  • Describe what consent is and how the team is utilized
  • Gain an understanding in a cultural point of view
  • Discuss genetic engineering, abortion, Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and how they affect individual views
  • Discuss issues on life and death, and death and dying

  • Legal knowledge in the medical office (statutory law, administrative law, common law, medical malpractice), duty of the physician (standard care, parameters of responsibility), civil and criminal law, contracts, medical malpractice, health care and business, medical records, ethics, privacy and confidentiality, and birth rights
