Description

Objective:

The course objective is for students to enhance ILR level 3 moving toward level 3+ and gain knowledge of Korean literature. At the conclusion course, students will develop skills to "read beyond the lines," i.e., to understand the full ramifications of texts as they are situated in the wider cultural, political, or social environment.

Learning Outcomes:

  • compare various critical and analytical methods (e.g., close reading, historical and linguistic analysis, ideological analysis) in the study of literary texts from a variety of genres and historical periods through written assignments
  • analyze the defining characteristics of a variety of literary forms and genres
  • interpret literary texts as shapers, reflectors, and instruments of change of cultural phenomena (e.g., value systems, familial/social institutions, government and their policies, philosophical/religious institutions)
  • evaluate functions and use of literary devices, such as symbolism, personification, and metaphor in a literary selection
  • critique figurative language, sound devices, and verse form in literary selections
  • analyze the contributions of literary texts within various societies, and their impact on history and the human condition
  • justify the use of cultural references, literary allusions, quotations from literature and other significant documents, and discuss in depth the culture's traditions, beliefs, history, national policies, and public issues
  • construct a comparative approach in the analysis of Korean literature and the expression of those ideas within a global literary context, focusing on the interplay of ideas and forms
  • create personal responses, such as appreciation, critique, and review, to literature and literary reviews
