Organization

The Ultrasound Diagnostic School was founded in New York City in 1977 and managed by two physicians from New York's Cabrini Medical Center. In 1981, the School was given approval to formally organize and be recognized by the New York State Education Department. In 1983, The Whitman Education Group (formerly Whitman Medical Corp.) purchased the School and expanded it to its present fourteen locations. The Ultrasound Diagnostic School in Middleburg Heights, Ohio operates under the name Sanford-Brown Institute. In 2003, the Whitman Education Group was acquired by Career Education Corporation.The basic training program is a 40-week didactic and laboratory instructional experience capped with an additional 3 1/2-month, full-time, clinical externship in a hospital or clinical setting. The objective of the program is to train individuals in human anatomy, physiology and pathology, medical terminology, physics of ultrasound and doppler techniques, and evaluations so that students may qualify as diagnostic medical sonographers. The continuing medical education course components are designed for practicing medical sonographers, physicians, and other medical personnel in imaging fields. Each facility annually conducts four sessions of the basic program: two during the day and two at night. Ultrasound Diagnostic School also offers educational training programs in Medical Assisting, Medical Billing and Coding, and Surgical Technology in addition to its foundation programs of Diagnostic Medical Ultrasound and Cardiovascular Technology.Each UDS institution is accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools, a U.S. Department of Education-approved allied health accrediting body for private and public postsecondary institutions. Also, each facility is licensed by its respective home state. All institutions are eligible to participate in the U.S. Department of Education Stafford Loan, Supplemental Loan for Students, and Pell Grant Program.
