University of South Carolina’s Women’s Leadership Institute also to be recognized
ACE
announced today that Judith S. White, president and executive director
of HERS (Higher Education Resource Services), will receive the 2018
Donna Shavlik Award.
The award will be presented at ACE2018, ACE’s 100th Annual Meeting in Washington, DC, during the Women’s Leadership Dinner on Saturday, March 10.
ACE established the Donna Shavlik Award
to honor the long and outstanding service of Donna Shavlik, former
director of ACE's Office of Women in Higher Education. Presented
annually, the award honors an individual who demonstrates a sustained
commitment to advancing women in higher education through leadership and
career development, campus climate, and mentoring.
For more than 40 years, HERS has been
dedicated to creating and sustaining a diverse community of women
leaders through leadership development programs and other strategies
with a special focus on gender equity within the broader commitment to
achieving equality and excellence in higher education.
“This is a critical time for women in higher
education, who are assuming more senior leadership roles than ever. But
there is still more work to be done,” said Ted Mitchell, ACE’s
president. “Judith White has been committed to that important work over
the past 13 years, helping HERS shape a curriculum of leadership
development that in turn shapes the next generation of women leaders.”
White has been president and executive
director of HERS since June 2005. During the early years of her tenure,
the signature HERS Institute was redesigned and expanded to three
locations, offering an enhanced curriculum to serve 200 women faculty
and administrators annually.
She now leads HERS’ partnership initiatives,
including the 2012 and 2014 HERS Summits for Women Presidents and
Chancellors; a research collaboration with the Center for Creative
Leadership; and a $450,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation for
supporting women in STEM Leadership.
Margee Ensign, president of Dickinson College (PA), will give the keynote address at the Women’s Leadership Dinner. Ensign’s speech will focus on leadership in the face of adversity.
2018 ACE State Network Leadership Award
The 2018 ACE State Network Leadership Award will be given to University of South Carolina’s Women’s Leadership Institute
(WLI). The award will be accepted by Mary Alexander, University of
South Carolina assistant provost for Academic Administration and chief
of staff, at the Women’s Network Leadership Council reception just prior to the Women’s Leadership Dinner.
The ACE State Network Leadership Award
recognizes an outstanding and innovative program sponsored by an ACE
State Network or by a college or university that helps advance or
support women or women's issues in higher education.
Occurring each spring, WLI is designed for
faculty, staff, and graduate students who are interested in the
advancement and success of women in leadership roles from higher
education institutions in South Carolina. It features workshops,
interactive presentations, and a networking luncheon centered on
promoting greater awareness of the challenges and opportunities women
face as they seek to achieve a work/life balance.
“We are honored to present the Women’s
Leadership Institute with the 2018 ACE State Network Leadership Award,”
said Kara Freeman Lee, interim vice president of ACE Leadership. “WLI is
creating a resilient community of women in South Carolina higher
education and empowering women at all stages of their careers.”
The 15th annual WLI, themed “Why Not Me?”
will host more than 420 women from South Carolina's higher education
institutions on April 25.
