ACE has released an updated version of the paper "Understanding College and University Endowments,” which discusses how these funds support an institution's educational mission and answers frequently asked questions about how they work.
The paper explains how an endowment is created, how institutions balance present and future needs in managing their endowments, and how the funds generated are used.
Data from the newly released 2020 NACUBO-TIAA Study of Endowments was instrumental in revising the paper, which found that institutions spent more from their endowments in fiscal year 2020 than in the prior year, supporting students, faculty, and their missions despite lower average financial returns.
