Eleven percent of college students seriously thought about attempting suicide in the past year. Of this percentage, one in 20 made a plan to carry it out.
Three out of 10 college students have struggled with depression in the last two weeks.
One in 4 students have expressed issues with anxiety.
These sobering statistics remind us that today’s college students struggle with a variety of mental health issues including depression, anxiety, and thoughts of suicide. Institutional leaders must be prepared to address mental health issues within the campus context and to create a supportive learning environment for students. Accordingly, ACE is convening a regional community to proactively address the challenge of student mental health and how it impacts individual institutions. Learn from experienced thought leaders, share best practices with your colleagues, and experiment with new ideas to plan effective future responses.
Over this day-and–a-half summit in New Orleans, institutional leaders will:
Examine the issues and current trends related to college student mental health;
Explore inter- and intra-institutional partnerships to foster mental health on campus;
Consider promising practices (and common missteps) for creating a campus environment that promotes mental health and well-being for all students; and,
Discuss how different types of institutions can best engage key constituent groups (e.g., faculty, staff, students, community members, etc.) in both addressing mental health challenges and supporting stakeholders working with affected individuals.
