While the American College President Study data point to the diversification of the presidential pathway, there is still a strong desire among search committees to create a pool of candidates that previously served as provosts or chief academic officers. However, institutions may have needs that a non-provost candidate can fulfill with their unique set of skills gained through their work in student affairs, legal affairs, academic affairs, advancement, nonprofits, and more.
ACE and Jan Greenwood, co-founder and senior advisor of the search firm Greenwood Asher & Associates, held a dynamic discussion with presidents and chancellors who did not serve as a provost before taking on their role. Panelists unpacked their pathways and shared advice for aspiring non-provost presidents and chancellors.
ACE’s The Changing College President: Aligning Experience with Necessity report informed this discussion.
