Colleges and universities say they want a not only a more diverse faculty, but also faculty members who contribute to mission-critical service work, are high-quality teachers, and who conduct research and scholarship across a range of methods and epistemologies. To recruit and retain faculty members and help them thrive across these domains, evaluation systems must change. This workshop takes an equity-minded approach to faculty evaluation policy reform. Attendees will become familiar with equity-minded principles and the research base that supports the reform of faculty evaluation policies in particular areas of faculty work (e.g., integration of diversity, equity, and inclusion criteria; recognition of work-life balance; and evaluation of service, teaching, and engaged scholarship). Attendees will also learn how reform in these areas can enhance the recruitment, retention, and advancement of a diverse faculty. The workshop draws on two recent ACE reports, Translating Equity-Minded Principles into Faculty Evaluation Reform (PDF) and Equity-Minded Reform of Faculty Evaluation (PDF), and provides concrete examples of policy reform in areas that are primed to promulgate inequities.
About ACE Workshops
Workshops are virtual, in-person, or hybrid active-learning experiences facilitated by top experts that enable higher education leaders to hone new skills, connect with peers, and put knowledge into action. Participants discuss their experiences, complete inquiry assignments, and develop plans that apply knowledge learned to challenges at their institutions. Depending on format, workshops can last anywhere from one to two days or four to eight weeks.
