Workshops are virtual, in-person, or hybrid active-learning experiences facilitated by top experts that enable higher education leaders to hone new skills, connect with peers, and put knowledge into action. Participants discuss their experiences, complete inquiry assignments, and develop plans that apply knowledge learned to challenges at their institutions. Depending on format, workshops can last anywhere from one to two day or four to eight weeks.

January 27, 2022 and February 3, 2022

Excelencia in Education has identified and examined evidence-based practices that increase Latino student success. Learn from experts how to intentionally implement and advance programs and policies that increase Latino student success. Attendees will discuss tools to assess Latino student strengths and needs, identify metrics to determine program effectiveness, and focus on being intentional in serving Latino student populations through program sustainability and institutionalization. 

This four-hour workshop (separated into two two-hour sessions) is geared toward administrators, faculty, and staff from institutions with an intentional focus on serving Latino and other post-traditional students, including student and academic affairs administrators; faculty working on student success initiatives; institutional research, planning, and assessment teams; and Title V program managers. 

Session 1: First Steps

January 27, 2022 | 2:00–4:00 PM

Participants will examine evidence-based practices with a Latino lens for an equitable approach to student success. Participants will leave the session having identified at least one key action to move toward solutions that they will take prior to Session 2. 

Session 2: Next Steps

February 3, 2022 | 2:00–4:00 PM   

Workshop participants will share what they learned from the actions they took after Session 1 and determine next steps to improve Latino student success. The workshop facilitators will share additional resources and opportunities for deepening learning and getting support from a network of programs and community of common cause. Participants will put their plans into action after the workshop.

About the Workshop Series

​ACE’s Race and Ethnicity in Higher Education project makes clear that colleges and universities must take action to increase the racial and ethnic diversity of their student bodies and workforces. Faculty and staff diversity has not kept up with the growing diversity of the student body, and people of color are disproportionately relegated to roles of lesser authority and prestige. Intentionally implementing and advancing programs and policies to increase student success among underrepresented populations has received insufficient attention.
