Description

Objective:

The course objective is to prepare the student to assist in the preparation and dispensing of medications and other health initiatives, and to provide high quality patient care in a retail pharmacy environment.

Learning Outcomes:

  • In accordance with the objectives found in the 'American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Accreditation Standard for Pharmacy Technician Training Programs, Part VII' published in the Practice Standards of ASHP, the student will be able to ass
  • Assist the pharmacist in the administration of immunizations
  • Control the inventory of medications, equipment, and devices according to an established plan
  • Understand the use and side effects of prescription and nonprescription medications used to treat common disease states
  • Monitor the practice site and/or service area for compliance with federal, state, and local laws
  • Assist the pharmacist in the monitoring of medication therapy
  • Appreciate the need to adapt direct patient care to meet the needs of diversity
  • Assist the pharmacist in assuring the quality of all pharmaceutical services
  • Evaluating information for direct patient care, medication use review, and departmental management
  • List brand/generic drugs
  • Carry-out pharmaceutical calculations
  • Maintain pharmacy equipment and facilities
  • Participate in the pharmacy department's process for preventing medication diversion
  • Understand the importance of and resources for staying current with changes in pharmacy practice
  • Communicate clearly when speaking and/or writing
  • Understand the role of The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) in maintaining patient privacy
  • Understand direct patient care delivery systems in multiple practice settings

  • : pharmacy workstations and workflow, pharmacy computer systems, generic equivalents, filling prescriptions and filling workstation fundamentals, Sig Codes, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacology, third party plans and workers' compensation, resolving exceptions, resolving third party rejects, Coordination of Benefits (COB), vaccine administration, storage and handling, Medicare Part B, Medicare Part D, robotic dispensing systems, HIPAA Privacy, Pharmacy Law (PTCB/ASHP), The methods of evaluation are reports, quizzes, examinations, and performance rubrics with a minimum passing score of 70 percent
