Description

Objective:

The course objective is to help students develop a deeper understanding of idioms and humor in line with cultural specifics of the Russian mentality and language expression at various walks of modern Russian society.

Learning Outcomes:

  • discuss the author’s intent and emotional overtones in the expression and humorous behaviors;
  • evaluate idioms and humor with certain communicative situations, type of discourse, age, profession and social status of speakers/writers;
  • correlate idioms and humor with certain opinions and attitudes of speakers/writers;
  • analyze idioms and humor in line with cultural specifics of the Russian mentality and language expression at various walks of modern Russian society.
  • identify meaning and syntactic appropriateness of idioms, correlating those features with neutral (business/unemotional) interpretation in Russian and translation into English
