Description

Objective:

The course objective is to cover the basic principles of general chemistry for students not majoring in a STEM discipline. In this course, students learn to describe chemical principles and apply them to their daily life, including relating the macroscopic world (what you see) to the microscopic world where chemistry takes place. The course explores different branches of chemistry and their applications, including atmospheric chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, and organic chemistry.

It is recommended that students complete this course simultaneously with the accompanying Introduction to Chemistry Lab course for the best experience.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the properties and behavior of solids, liquids, gases, and solutions.
  • Compare acids and bases, the major chemical cycles, pollutants, and common organic and biological molecules.
  • Explain and quantify the reactions and energy associated with matter.
