The Division of Education (formerly Department of Correctional Education) was merged with the Virginia Department of Corrections in July 2012. It had been an independent agency from 1973-2012. Our vision is, 'Through educational excellence we transform the lives of our students.' Our mission is, 'To provide high quality education programs that meet the individual needs of offenders and increase their success during incarceration and re-entry.' Our objective is to provide adult basic education leading to a GED and Career and Technical Education (CTE); however, post-secondary education, career readiness, industry-certification, and apprenticeships are also major goals.Administrators and teachers are required to have a Virginia Teaching License with the appropriate endorsements. The Division of Education is designated 'a local education agency' in the Code of Virginia, responsible for the education of adult offenders in state-operated prisons. Schools meet the accreditation requirements of the American Correctional Association. The Division of Education is affiliated with the Virginia Community College System; University of Virginia; James Madison University; Sunshine Lady Foundation; Kate's Foundation; National Center for Construction Education and Research; Residential Construction Academy through the Home Builders' Institute; GED Testing Service; Virginia Department of Labor and Industry; and Johnson Controls.CTE courses are designed to provide students with entry level and advanced skills expected by employers. Industry-based certifications, examinations (Ex: Comp Tia A+), and apprenticeship programs offer opportunities for additional credentials for employment. Lifelong learning is also emphasized.During FY2012 - 2013, 1,070 adult students completed vocational programs; 1,769 earned industry credentials; 101 competed apprenticeships; 1,093 earned GEDs; and 1,727 earned Career Readiness Certificates. Our motto is, 'Fighting crime through education.' Educational credentials make our clients more employable and reduce recidivism.
