Organization

The mission of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) is as follows: 'ASSE is a global association providing professional development and representation for those engaged in the practice of safety, health, and the environment and providing services to the private and public sectors to protect people, property, and the environment.'

The Society fosters the technical, scientific, managerial, and ethical knowledge, skills, and competency of safety professionals. The Society is committed to provide quality, accessible educational opportunities for members and others who aspire to personal preeminence in the safety, health, and environmental fields. The self-study courses were developed by the ASSE Technical Services Department (TSD). Educational prorgram responsibilities are currently managed by the ASSE Professional Development Department (PD).Using Needs Assessment and other membership surveys the TSD developed correspondence courses to meet the overall educational/training goals of the Society. Students/enrollees expand their learning of the subject and gain the opportunity for valuable college credit. The courses are particularly helpful to those preparing for certification examinations, in obtaining continuing education credit, and for developing new expertise.Once course subject areas and accompanying texts were selected, TSD staff chose nationally recognized experts (P.E., CSPs, etc.) in specifically related disciplines whose credentials were ascertained by TSD staff through quality review both external and internal to the Society to serve as the collective faculty for the correspondence courses. Based upon their review and selection of relevant learning principles in their specific discipline, the curriculum of study was developed under the auspices of a principal author. The courses are offered through the ASSE and its 148 nationwide chapters and 12 Practice Specialties. While the courses are centrally administered from headquarters to facilitate the matriculation process, summary-proctored examinations are administered locally under general control of the central administrative function.
