Established in 1966 as a training facility for both merchant marine engineering cadets and licensed Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association (MEBA) marine officers serving aboard United States merchant vessels, the school provides continuing education and license upgrading opportunities for MEBA marine officers. Specific guidelines and requirements are established by a board of trustees composed of shipping company representatives and elected MEBA officers.Calhoon is dedicated to providing training that enhances the qualifications of MEBA marine officers to operate U.S. merchant vessels safely, efficiently, and in compliance with all applicable maritime laws. Courses use state-of-the-art equipment in conjunction with proven instructional techniques. All course documentation, development, and revisions reflect changes in industry or regulatory body requirements conducted under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines. They are implemented under the direction of the U.S. Coast Guard and are consistent with generally accepted curriculum design models.Instructors must meet rigorous standards that include certification and demonstrated proficiency in their fields of expertise.
