As campus leaders prepare for students to return in the fall following the protests, encampments and arrests that occurred at some institutions last term, ACE Vice President and General Counsel Peter McDonough posed some top-of-mind questions to three experts on issues such as free speech and student safety. The resulting ACE issue brief, Preparing for a Potentially Tumultuous Fall on Campus: A Conversation with a Former President, General Counsel and Campus Police Chief Who Have Been There Before, features thoughts from Frederick M. Lawrence, former president of Brandeis University and current secretary and CEO of The Phi Beta Kappa Society, Stephen S. Dunham, vice president and general counsel emeritus of The Pennsylvania State University, and Steven J. Healy, CEO of The Healy+ Group and a nationally recognized expert on campus safety whose previous roles include director of public safety and chief of police at Princeton University.
In the issue brief, with an eye towards election day as well as the first anniversary of the Oct. 7 massacres in Israel, McDonough poses questions such as what were several things that occurred last year that no one saw coming and how presidents and their boards should be thinking about the tensions that can occur between free speech and student safety and the importance of both.
